Turn the box and the answer changes

Calculates how many boxes fit on a pallet by footprint, height and weight, trying both orientations of the box.

A pallet is a rectangle and so is a box, and the two rarely divide evenly. Turning the box ninety degrees often fits an extra column, which is why both orientations are worth testing before the load plan is fixed.

After the footprint come two ceilings: the height a warehouse or a lorry allows, and the weight the pallet itself can carry. Whichever runs out first decides the load.

What to keep in mind

All boxes stand the same way up and are not rotated within a layer. Interlocked patterns can fit a little more but are harder to wrap.
The height limit includes the pallet itself, which is why its own height is a separate field.

FAQs

What size is a euro pallet?

1200 by 800 millimetres, about 15 centimetres tall and 25 kilograms empty. The other common standard is 1200 by 1000.

Can boxes overhang the pallet?

Better not. Overhang loses much of the box's stacking strength and is what collapses a load in transit.

Why does turning the box help?

Because fitting depends on how the pallet divides by each dimension. 120 divided by 30 is exactly four; 120 divided by 40 is three, and the remainder is wasted.

What height limit should I use?

Whatever the tightest constraint is: about 180 cm for hand loading, 220 for racking, and the vehicle's door height for road transport.

Worked example

A euro pallet

Input: 40 × 30 × 25 cm boxes at 8 kg, a 120 × 80 pallet, 180 cm and 1,000 kg limits

Output: 48 boxes: 8 to a layer, 6 layers

Note: Turned sideways the boxes give eight to a layer against six laid straight, and they cover the pallet exactly. Height is the binding limit here; the load stops at 384 kg.
