Brick count from wall area and thickness, allowing for brick type, joint width and breakage, plus the mortar volume.

Bricks are counted through the area of the stretcher face plus its joint. A 250 by 65 mm brick with a 10 mm joint gives a 260 by 75 module, and it is that module — not the brick's own size — that sets consumption per square metre.

Wall thickness does the rest. Half-brick takes about 51 per square metre, one brick twice that, one-and-a-half three times. So area and volume must not be confused: enter the wall area and the calculator applies the layers.

What to keep in mind

Brick sizes follow the Russian standard: 250×120×65 single, 88 mm one-and-a-half, 138 mm double.
Mortar takes roughly 20 percent of the wall volume, an average for a 10 mm joint.

FAQs

How many bricks per square metre?

Half-brick 51 singles, one brick 102, one-and-a-half 153, two bricks 204. One-and-a-half size bricks come in about a quarter lower.

Why allow for breakage?

Some arrive faulty, some crack in transit and some split when cut. Five percent is the usual minimum; make it seven for facing brick.

How many bricks on a pallet?

Typically 275 to 330 singles; 300 is used here. The exact figure is on the delivery note and varies by works, so re-check the pallet count.

What is one-and-a-half brick thickness?

A 380 mm wall — a stretcher course plus a header course. It is the classic load-bearing thickness in a temperate climate without extra insulation.

Worked example

A one-brick wall

Input: 50 m², single brick, one-brick thickness, 10 mm joint, 5% breakage

Output: 5,385 bricks, 18 pallets, 2.5 m³ of mortar

Note: That works out at about 102 per square metre, which matches the standard reference figure for one-brick work.
