Four systems for one garment

Maps Russian, European, American and British clothing sizes onto one another, and finds a size from a chest measurement.

In women's clothing the Russian size is the European plus six: a Russian 46 is a European 40. In menswear they coincide, because both equal half the chest measurement in centimetres. The American and British systems run on their own numbers entirely.

The reliable anchor is not a number but the chest measurement, which is the same everywhere. Hence the second mode here: find the size from centimetres rather than from someone else's numbering.

What European size is a Russian 46?

A 40 in womenswear and a 46 in menswear. The Russian women's system is offset from the European by exactly six numbers.

How do I convert a Russian size to American?

For women subtract 38: a Russian 46 is a US 8. For men subtract 10: a Russian 48 is a US 38.

What size is an M?

A Russian 46 and European 40 for women, a 48 for men. Letter sizing is the vaguest system and varies most between brands.

How do I choose across many brands?

Measure your chest and check the brand's own table. The number on the label is a guide, not a standard: the spread between brands reaches a full size.

Note: The Russian and American numbers differ almost sixfold, which is impossible to hold in your head. A 92-centimetre chest is the one figure that works in any shop in the world.
