What matters
The table is an average: a given brand can run a size out either way — check its own chart against your chest measurement.

Four systems for one garment

Maps Russian, European, American and British clothing sizes onto one another, and finds a size from a chest measurement.

In women's clothing the Russian size is the European plus six: a Russian 46 is a European 40. In menswear they coincide, because both equal half the chest measurement in centimetres. The American and British systems run on their own numbers entirely.

The reliable anchor is not a number but the chest measurement, which is the same everywhere. Hence the second mode here: find the size from centimetres rather than from someone else's numbering.

How to use

Choose women's or men's clothing.
Choose the system you know your size in — Russian, European, US or UK — and enter the size.
For a better match, enter your chest measurement: the calculator will pick the size from it instead.

Women's sizes

The Russian women's size is the European plus six and equals half the chest in centimetres; the US size is the Russian minus 38.

Every row comes from the calculator on this page.
Russian	Letter	EU	US	UK	Chest, cm
42	S	36	4	8	84
44	S	38	6	10	88
46	M	40	8	12	92
48	L	42	10	14	96
50	L	44	12	16	100
52	XL	46	14	18	104
54	XXL	48	16	20	108

Men's sizes

In menswear the Russian and European sizes coincide — both are half the chest in centimetres — and US and UK sizes are the Russian minus ten.

Every row comes from the calculator on this page.
Russian / EU	Letter	US / UK	Chest, cm
44	XS	34	88
46	S	36	92
48	M	38	96
50	L	40	100

What this calculator shows

One size expressed in the Russian, European, American and British systems
The international S, M, L label and the chest measurement
A size found from a measurement when the foreign numbers make no sense

What to keep in mind

These are the correspondences built into this calculator, not a size standard; check the brand's own measurement chart.
Asian sizing systems are not covered here: use the specific brand's size chart for them.

FAQs

What European size is a Russian 46?

A 40 in womenswear and a 46 in menswear. The Russian women's system is offset from the European by exactly six numbers.

How do I convert a Russian size to American?

For women subtract 38: a Russian 46 is a US 8. For men subtract 10: a Russian 48 is a US 38.

What size is an M?

In the calculator, a Russian 46 and European 40 for women, a Russian 48 for men. Letter sizes vary most between brands.

What chest size is a US 8?

92 cm in the calculator — a Russian 46, EU 40, UK 12.

What if my chest does not match my usual size?

Enter the chest measurement in its own field and the calculator picks the size from it. A woman with a 96 cm chest gets a 48 (US 10), even if she usually buys a 46.

How do I choose across many brands?

Measure your chest and check the brand's own table. The number on the label is a guide, not a standard.

Worked example

A Russian women's 46

Input: Womenswear, Russian size 46

Output: M, EU 40, US 8, UK 12, 92 cm chest

Note: The Russian and American numbers differ almost sixfold, which is impossible to hold in your head. A 92-centimetre chest is the one figure that works in any shop in the world.
