The hertz prefixes behave predictably: each one is a thousand times the last. Radio lives in megahertz, processors in gigahertz, audio in kilohertz, and mains electricity in a modest fifty.

Revolutions per minute and heartbeats sit apart only because they are counted per minute rather than per second. Three thousand engine revolutions is exactly fifty hertz — the same as the mains.

50 hertz in Europe and Russia, 60 in the US and parts of Asia. Which is why identical motors run at different nominal speeds.

What does a processor's gigahertz figure mean?

Clock cycles per second: 3 gigahertz is three billion cycles. On its own it does not determine performance, because architectures do different amounts of work per cycle.

Note: Exactly one gigahertz — SI prefixes step in clean thousands. In revolutions the same frequency is 60 billion a minute, which shows the gulf in scale between electronics and mechanics.
