Tightening figures in someone else's units

Converts torque between newton metres, kilogram-force metres, pound-feet and pound-inches.

The newton metre is the SI unit and nearly every European manual uses it. American manuals give pound-feet, and older Russian literature gives kilogram-force metres, often shortened to 'kilogrammetres'.

The confusion is expensive: one pound-foot is 1.36 newton metres while one kilogram-force metre is nearly ten. Mistaking the second for the first means over-tightening by roughly a factor of seven.

What to keep in mind

Kilogram-force metres use the standard gravitational acceleration of 9.80665 m/s².
A torque specification always carries a tolerance: landing within ±10 percent is normally sufficient.

How does a kilogram-force metre differ from a newton metre?

By a factor of 9.80665. Ten newton metres is about one kilogram-force metre.

What torque do wheel bolts take?

Usually 110 to 140 newton metres on a passenger car, which is 11 to 14 kgf·m or 81 to 103 pound-feet. The manufacturer sets the exact figure.

What is a pound-inch?

A torque twelve times smaller than a pound-foot. It is used for small fasteners where the pound-foot would be too coarse.

Worked example

A hundred newton metres

Input: 100 N·m into pound-feet

Output: 73.76 pound-feet

Note: The same hundred newton metres is only 10.2 kilogram-force metres. A torque wrench scaled in kgf·m needs that figure, and getting it wrong ends in stripped threads.
