What matters
Providers sell megabits and files are megabytes: 100 Mbps is at best 12.5 MB/s. A gigabyte here is decimal, 1,000 MB; Windows shows sizes in binary units, so its "80 GB" is 85.9 decimal ones.

Megabits and megabytes differ by a factor of eight

Works out how long a download takes at your connection speed, with an allowance for overhead.

Providers sell megabits per second and file sizes are quoted in megabytes. That factor of eight is the main source of disappointment: a hundred megabits per second is at best 12.5 megabytes, roughly a gigabyte every minute and a half.

The real speed is lower still: part of the line goes on protocol data, and the distribution server or the disk can hold a download back. Hence the overhead field — 10 percent by default, an assumption rather than a measurement.

How to use

Enter the game size in gigabytes — the calculator counts a gigabyte as 1,000 MB.
Give the speed and pick the unit: providers sell megabits, files are measured in megabytes.
Set the overhead: part of the link goes on protocol data and on unpacking.
Compare against a real download — if it runs noticeably slower, the limit may be the disk, the distribution server or other devices on the network.

How long an 80-gigabyte game takes

Each row is a run of this calculator at 80 GB with 10 percent overhead. Dividing by eight is where most of the confusion lives: 100 Mbps is 12.5 MB/s at best, and 11.25 after overhead.

Time is inversely proportional to speed, so each doubling of the line buys fewer and fewer actual minutes: 25 to 50 Mbps saves 3 hours 57 minutes, while 300 to 1,000 saves just 28 minutes.

Runs of this calculator at 80 GB with 10 percent overhead.
Line speed	Effective speed	Time	Per gigabyte
25 Mbps	2.81 MB/s	7 h 54 min	5.93 min
50 Mbps	5.63 MB/s	3 h 57 min	2.96 min
100 Mbps	11.25 MB/s	1 h 59 min	1.48 min
300 Mbps	33.75 MB/s	40 min	0.49 min
1,000 Mbps	112.5 MB/s	12 min	0.15 min

What this calculator shows

The download time in hours and minutes
The real speed in megabytes after overhead
How many minutes each gigabyte takes

What to keep in mind

Ten percent of loss is assumed by default — the calculator's assumption, best replaced with your own. A gigabyte counts as decimal, 1,000 MB.
Decompression time is not counted, and for large games it can rival the download itself.

FAQs

How long does 100 GB take at 100 Mbps?

In decimal gigabytes, 2 hours 13 minutes in ideal conditions and about 2 hours 28 minutes with 10 percent overhead.

Why is my download slower than my plan?

The plan is in megabits and the download shows megabytes — divide by eight. Add protocol overhead and limits on the game server's side.

Wired or Wi-Fi?

Wired, nearly always: it delivers the advertised speed consistently, while Wi-Fi loses it to distance, interference and the number of devices on the network.

Can a store download be sped up?

Changing the download region and cutting background traffic sometimes helps. Nothing exceeds the speed of the line itself.

Why is 100 Mbps not 100 MB/s?

There are eight bits in a byte, and the provider sells bits while the file is measured in bytes. A hundred megabits a second is 12.5 megabytes a second at best, and about 11.25 once overhead is taken out.

Why does the real download run slower than the estimate?

The estimate shows the limit of the line. You can just as easily hit the write speed of the disk, the distribution server, on-the-fly unpacking, or other devices on the same network. The overhead field is there to bring the estimate in line with what you actually see.

Worked example

A big game on a hundred-megabit line

Input: 80 GB at 100 Mbps, 10% overhead

Output: 1 hour 59 minutes at a real 11.25 MB/s

Note: Without the division by eight the same 80 gigabytes would 'take' fifteen minutes. Which is why 'fast internet' and 'downloads fast' line up worse than people expect.
