This is a universal progression model. A specific game can later get its own preset with the exact formula.

Levelling curves, made explicit

Work out the experience needed to reach a target level under common RPG curves, and how much grinding that represents.

Experience curves are almost always exponential, which is why early levels fly past and later ones crawl. The exponent decides how brutal that becomes.

Choosing a curve preset shows the total XP required and what remains, so you can judge whether a level is one evening away or twenty.

FAQs

Why do later levels take so much longer?

Requirements grow exponentially rather than linearly. An exponent of 1.5 means level 40 can cost eight times what level 10 did.

Which preset matches my game?

Compare a known figure — the XP for a level you have already passed — and pick the closest curve. Most games sit between 1.3 and 1.8.

Does it handle XP boosts?

Not directly. Divide the remaining XP by your multiplier: a 50% boost means you need about a third fewer runs.

Can I plan a grind with this?

Yes, that is the practical use. Divide the remaining XP by what one run gives, and you have the number of runs.

Why late levels drag

Input: A curve with exponent 1.5

Output: Level 20 costs roughly three times what level 10 did

Note: Exponential curves are a pacing device: they stretch late progression without needing new content.
