The figure on a flat-rate bill is not what you actually use. Real consumption is built from simple numbers: a shower runs about nine litres a minute, a full bath takes a hundred and eighty, a flush is six, a washing machine cycle fifty.

The breakdown is nearly always a surprise. In most households the biggest consumer is neither the washing machine nor the dishwasher but the shower, plus the tap left running while washing up and brushing teeth.

How much water does one person use a day?

In a flat, usually 130 to 250 litres. Flat-rate allowances are generally set above real consumption, which is why a meter almost always pays for itself.

Shower or bath — which uses more?

A bath takes about 180 litres in one go, a shower about 9 litres a minute. So a shower longer than twenty minutes has already lost the comparison.

How many cubic metres a month for a family?

Typically 4 to 7 cubic metres per person a month, hot and cold together. A household of three lands between 12 and 20.

What actually cuts consumption?

A low-flow shower head and tap aerators give the fastest result — up to a third. A dual-flush cistern adds a few percent more.

Output: 600 litres a day, 18 m³ a month

Note: Two hundred litres per person per day is on the high side. The shower dominates here at 216 litres — more than a third of everything used.
