Paid as one lump sum before the birth

Maternity benefit for 140, 156 or 194 days with the contribution ceiling above and the minimum-wage floor below. This benefit is not taxed.

Maternity benefit is calculated much like sick pay but differs in two ways. It is always 100 percent of average earnings — length of service makes no difference — and days of illness or previous parental leave are subtracted from the 730-day divisor, which usually pushes the daily figure up.

It is also paid in one go, covering the whole leave, rather than month by month. No income tax is withheld, so the amount calculated is the amount received.

What to keep in mind

The ceiling is the sum of two years' contribution bases divided by 730 — no salary, however high, produces more than that.
The floor is 24 months of minimum wage divided by 730, applied whenever real earnings fall below it.

FAQs

When is it 156 or 194 days instead of 140?

156 days for a complicated birth, with the extra sixteen days issued afterwards on a separate certificate. 194 days for a multiple pregnancy, where leave also starts earlier, at week 28.

Can the reference years be swapped?

Yes, if they contained maternity or parental leave. Earlier years can be substituted on request — but only when doing so increases the benefit.

What if I worked less than two years?

Missing months count as zero, and if the result falls under the floor the minimum wage applies. With less than six months of service the calculation always uses the minimum wage.

Is any tax withheld?

No. Maternity benefit is explicitly exempt. The separate childcare allowance up to eighteen months is also untaxed but uses a different formula — 40 percent of average earnings.

Worked example

Standard birth on a salary near 80,000

Input: 850,000 and 980,000 ₽ over two years, 20 excluded days, 140 days

Output: Daily average 2,577.46 ₽, benefit 360,844 ₽

Note: Those twenty excluded days lifted the daily figure by about 70 ₽ and added nearly ten thousand to the total. It is worth digging out sick-leave dates for the reference years.
