Paste the periods, get the total

Add up separate employment periods and get the total in years, months and days. Both end dates count, the way personnel records treat them.

Adding service periods by hand goes wrong for a boring reason: months have different lengths and the gaps between jobs are easy to miscount. Enter each period on its own line and the total comes back in the format personnel departments use.

One rule catches almost everyone out — the last day of a job counts as worked. A period running from 1 February to 28 February is 28 days, not 27, and simple date subtraction quietly loses that day.

What to keep in mind

Years are counted as 365 days and months as 30 — the convention used when service is converted for personnel documents.
Overlapping periods are not merged. Two jobs held at once still count as one stretch of service, so avoid entering both.

FAQs

Does time at university count as service?

Not toward the insured service used for a Russian pension, since no contributions were paid. It counted under the pre-2002 rules, which now apply only to periods before that date.

What about parental leave?

The first eighteen months per child count toward insured service, capped at six years in total. Add such a stretch as its own line and it is treated like ordinary employment.

Why is the result one day longer than my own count?

You almost certainly subtracted one date from the other. From the 1st to the 10th is ten days, but subtraction gives nine. The final day is included here.

How much service does a pension need?

Fifteen years of insured service plus thirty pension points. The two are tracked separately, so it is possible to have the years but fall short on points if declared pay was low.

Worked example

Three jobs in a row

Input: 2013-09-02 → 2017-05-31, 2017-06-19 → 2021-11-30, 2022-02-14 → 2026-07-31

Output: 12 years 4 months 8 days

Note: The 18-day gap between the first and second job and the two-and-a-half-month gap before the third are excluded, while every final working day is counted.
