For board games, tabletop RPGs and settling arguments

Roll any number of dice with any number of sides, add a modifier, and see each result plus the total.

Physical dice go missing exactly when a game starts. This rolls any combination — 2d6 for a board game, d20 for a skill check, 4d6 for rolling up a character.

Individual results are shown, not just the total, because in most games the individual numbers matter: doubles, critical hits, or dropping the lowest die.

How to use

Set the number of dice and the number of sides.
Roll — the calculator shows each die separately along with the total.
For tabletop games, write the roll in the usual form: 2d6 is two six-sided dice.
Remember that the total of several dice is not evenly distributed: the middle comes up far more often than the edges.

How the roll changes with more dice

The figures in the table are properties of the total rather than the result of any one roll. The mean is the number of dice times the mean of one die, which for a six-sided die is 3.5.

The last column matters more: the chance of an extreme total falls sixfold with every die added. With one die a six comes up once in six; with three dice, eighteen comes up once in 216. That is why rolls of many dice cluster near the mean.

What to keep in mind

Each die is fair and independent, which real dice only approximate.
Uses a pseudo-random generator — fine for games, not for anything requiring cryptographic randomness.

FAQs

Is this as fair as a physical die?

Fairer, in practice. Real dice have moulded pips, rounded corners and manufacturing bias; the generator here has none of that.

Why is 7 so common on two dice?

Because six of the 36 combinations add to seven, while only one gives two. Totals in the middle simply have more ways of happening.

What does 3d6+2 mean?

Roll three six-sided dice, add them, then add 2. Set the count to 3, sides to 6 and modifier to 2.

Can I roll unusual dice?

Yes, any number of sides from 2 to 1000. That covers d3, d7 and other unusual dice. Physical d3s and d7s are made too, but a virtual roll does not need one to hand.

What does 2d6 mean?

Two six-sided dice, with the total as the result. The number before the letter is how many dice, the number after is how many sides; 1d20 is one twenty-sided die.

Why does the total of several dice behave differently from one?

Because on one die every value is equally likely and on a total none of them are. The middle is made by many combinations and the edge by one: on 2d6, seven comes up six times as often as two.

Output: A roll from 1 to 20, plus 5

Note: With 2d6 the totals are not flat: 7 comes up six times as often as 2, because there are six ways to make it and only one way to make snake eyes.
