Random, but in a mood you choose

Generates random colours in HEX, RGB and HSL with a preview, and says whether light or dark text will read on each.

A colour picked completely at random is usually unusable: too dark, too grey, or a shade nobody wants behind text. Constraining the saturation and lightness is what turns noise into a palette.

So the modes here are not filters over random output — they are different ranges to draw from. Pastel keeps lightness high and saturation low, vivid does the opposite, and dark stays in the bottom third.

What to keep in mind

Text colour is chosen by relative luminance, the same measure the contrast standards use.
The palette is drawn from the seed, so the same seed rebuilds the same colours and a link to a palette is stable.

FAQs

How do I know what text to put on a colour?

By its relative luminance. Above roughly 0.35 dark text reads better, below it light text does — which is the rule this tool applies.

What does HSL give me that HEX does not?

Control. Hue, saturation and lightness are the three things you actually want to adjust, and in HEX all three are tangled together.

Can I get the same palette again?

Yes, that is what the seed is for. The same seed always produces the same colours in the same order.

Are these colours accessible?

The text suggestion is a starting point, not a guarantee. For a real interface check the exact pair against the contrast ratio you need.
