How it was worked out
(3.4 × 90 − 3.2 × 60) ÷ 30 = 3.8: credits weight the grades, so what is already done carries 67% of the average

The more you have done, the harder it moves

Works out the average needed across the remaining credits to reach a target GPA by graduation.

A degree average gets heavier every term. After 60 credits at a 3.2 GPA, the remaining 30 credits have to average 3.8 to bring the overall figure to 3.4: the past carries two thirds of the result and the future one third.

That sets a ceiling. With those same numbers the best possible outcome is 3.467, even with top marks on everything left — so a target of 3.5 is out of reach, and the planner says so rather than returning 4.1, which cannot be scored on a 4.0 scale.

Credits work as weights here, not as a count of modules: a 6-credit course moves the average three times as hard as a 2-credit one.

How to use

Enter your current average and the credits behind it.
Enter the average you are aiming at.
Enter the credits still to come.
Check the scale maximum: 4 for a GPA, 5 for a five-point average, 100 for percentages.

What each target costs

Every row is a calculator run with a 3.2 GPA over 60 credits and 30 credits remaining on a 4.0 scale. The ceiling is 3.467 in all of them: it does not depend on the target.

Calculator runs at a 3.2 GPA over 60 credits with 30 remaining.
Target	Needed over the last 30 credits	Best achievable	Verdict
3.30	3.50	3.467	reachable
3.40	3.80	3.467	reachable
3.50	4.10	3.467	out of reach
3.60	4.40	3.467	out of reach
3.70	4.70	3.467	out of reach

Why the ceiling drops every term

The ceiling is the average you reach with perfect marks on everything left: the past weighted by its credits, plus the scale maximum weighted by the credits remaining. The more credits are already banked, the closer it sits to where you are now.

Early on, with 30 credits done out of 240, one weak term barely shows. By the final year, with 30 left out of 240, the average cannot move by more than a fraction — and that is arithmetic rather than pessimism.

So the practical advice is to run the numbers early. The planner puts the gap to target and the ceiling side by side so that "what would it take" and "is it possible at all" are answered together.

What to keep in mind

The average is credit-weighted: a six-credit course counts twice as heavily as a three-credit one.
The scale is configurable — 4 for GPA, 5 for the Russian scale, 100 for a hundred-point one. The arithmetic is the same.

FAQs

What GPA do I need this semester?

With a 3.2 over 60 credits and a target of 3.4, the remaining 30 credits have to average 3.8. The formula multiplies the target by all the credits, subtracts what is banked and divides by what is left.

Why does it say the target is out of reach?

Because the average required came out above the top of the scale. With a 3.2 over 60 credits and 30 remaining, the ceiling is 3.467 — nothing above that is available however well the rest goes.

Can I raise my GPA in my final year?

A little. By then the credits already banked carry most of the weight: thirty remaining credits out of 240 move the average by tenths, not whole points.

How do credits affect a GPA?

They are the weights. A 6-credit course enters the average three times as strongly as a 2-credit one, so identical grades on different modules shift the figure by different amounts.

Does this work on a five-point scale?

Yes — set the scale maximum to 5 and enter the marks in it. The formula does not depend on the scale, as long as the current average, the target and the maximum are all on the same one.

What is the gap to target?

The distance between the target and the current average. It shows how far the target is, while the figure needed over the remaining credits shows the price: a gap of 0.2 with a third of the credits left needs an average 0.6 above the current one — 3.8 against a target of 3.4.

How is this different from the grade calculator?

Here the weights are credits and the subject is a whole-degree average. In the grade calculator every piece of work weighs the same, and it deals with assignments inside a single course.

Worked example

3.2 after two years

Input: 3.2 GPA over 60 credits, target 3.4, 30 credits remaining, scale to 4

Output: 3.8 needed over the remaining courses; best achievable 3.467

Note: A target of 3.5 on the same figures would need 4.10 — above the top of the scale.
