A page is a norm, not a physical sheet

Converts characters and words into pages using standard layout norms for coursework, essays and theses.

A page is a unit of account, not a sheet of paper, and there is more than one of them. The standard accounting page used across Russia and the CIS holds 1,800 characters including spaces; a properly filled typescript page holds 1,860 characters double spaced, 2,450 at one-and-a-half and 3,630 single spaced. The same 40,000-character text lands on 22.2 pages under the first unit and 11 under the last.

That is why this calculator asks for characters per page rather than font size and margins: point size, leading and margins interact, and only the character count is stable enough to divide by. If your supervisor named a figure of their own, type it in and the preset is ignored.

One author's sheet in four units

The author's sheet, defined by GOST R 7.0.3-2006, is exactly 40,000 printed characters including spaces — the unit Russian publishers still commission and pay by. Each row below is a run of this calculator over that length, with only the unit changing.

Words per page are derived by dividing characters by the word length you supply, not looked up in a table: at six characters a word the standard page comes to 300 words and the single-spaced typescript page to 605.

Where these units come from

The 1,800-character page comes from clause 3.3.6 of the translation recommendations approved by the board of the Union of Translators of Russia on 14 May 2004: work is priced per word, per line, per standard accounting page or per author's sheet. One such page normally holds 1,800 characters of finished translation, or 1,620 characters of source text.

The three typescript figures come from the Soviet labour-committee rules on typists' output, which counted a properly filled page as 29–31 lines (1,860 characters) double spaced, 38–41 lines (2,450) at one-and-a-half and 58–61 lines (3,630) single spaced. Behind that sits the typewriter page itself: 58–60 characters a line over 28–30 lines.

Other countries count differently. The United States, France and Sweden price per word; the United Kingdom and Ireland per thousand words; Germany per line, where a standard line runs to 55 characters.

How many pages is 1,800 characters?

One standard accounting page. It is the unit from the Union of Translators of Russia's recommendations, and it is what "a page of text" means across Russia and the CIS when nothing else is specified.

How many pages are there in an author's sheet?

An author's sheet is 40,000 printed characters, which is 22.22 standard accounting pages or 11.02 single-spaced typescript ones. In typed pages at normal fill it works out at roughly 22–23.

How many words fit on a page?

It depends on how long the words in your text are. The calculator divides the characters on a page by the word length you supply: at six characters a word that is 300 words on a 1,800-character page and 605 on a 3,630-character one. For your own text, divide characters with spaces by the word count.

What counts as a printed character?

Every visible character — letters, punctuation, digits — plus every space between words. That is the figure your word processor reports as characters with spaces.

Why is there no "12 point, double spaced" preset?

Because a font setting does not fix a character count: margins, indents and word lengths all move it. Only the number of characters on a page divides reliably, so that is what the calculator asks for.

What if I only know the word count?

Switch the mode to words and enter it. The calculator converts words to characters using the word length you give, then counts pages from the characters. Use your own word length where you can: characters with spaces divided by words.

Are these units used outside Russia?

Not directly. Anglophone publishing usually commissions by word count, and a German standard line is 55 characters. The custom field exists for exactly this: enter whatever your publisher or supervisor uses, and the presets stay out of the way.
