For when an editor is more trouble than it is worth

Performs bulk replacement in text using a plain search or a regular expression, and counts the matches.

Replacement in a text editor works when the text is in a file. For a fragment from an email, a log or a spreadsheet it is quicker to paste it here than to open an editor and copy the result back out.

Regular expression mode covers what a plain search cannot: strip every digit, collapse repeated spaces, remove the contents of brackets. Group references of the form $1 are available in the replacement.

How do I replace every occurrence at once?

Replacement is global by default: all matches are handled in a single pass.

How do I strip all digits from a text?

Turn on regular expressions and search for the digit class, leaving the replacement field empty.

Can I use capture groups in the replacement?

Yes, in regular-expression mode $1 and $2 refer to captured groups. That is how date and phone formats are rearranged.

Why does searching for a plus sign find nothing?

In regular-expression mode a plus means repetition of the previous character. Either escape it with a backslash or switch regular expressions off.

Worked example

Normalising phone numbers

Input: Replace '+7 ' with '8 ' in a line holding two numbers

Output: 2 matches replaced

Note: Plain search is enough here because the plus sign is escaped automatically. In regular-expression mode that same plus would mean repetition and nothing would match.
