Filler that lets people judge the layout, not the copy

Generate filler text for mockups and layouts in the exact amount you need, whether that is three paragraphs or forty words.

Placeholder text exists so that reviewers look at the design instead of reading the words. Real copy in a mockup pulls every comment toward the wording and away from the layout.

The lorem ipsum in use today spread with Letraset's dry-transfer sheets from 1966. It survives because it looks like Latin prose without meaning anything.

How to use

Choose the unit: paragraphs, sentences or words.
Set how many, from 1 to 50.
Copy the text; the word and character counts are shown below it.

How much text you get

The first sentence is always the canonical 'Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit.'; after that the generator builds sentences of 8 to 16 words, four to a paragraph. The same settings always give the same text.

Every row is output from this page's generator.
Request	Words	Characters
1 paragraph	41	281
3 paragraphs	125	840
5 paragraphs	225	1,512
3 sentences	27	195
10 sentences	102	690
8 words	8	55
50 words	50	331

What to keep in mind

The text is deliberately meaningless — it is scrambled Latin, not a translatable passage.
The generated text has no Cyrillic and no accented letters, so it will not reveal font problems with those characters.

FAQs

Where does lorem ipsum come from?

It is a garbled passage from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC. Letraset's transfer sheets made it popular from 1966; the often-repeated claim that 16th-century printers used it has no evidence behind it.

Why not just use real text?

Because reviewers start editing the copy instead of assessing the design. Meaningless text keeps the conversation on layout and typography.

Should I use Cyrillic filler for a Russian product?

Yes. Latin placeholder text will not reveal missing Cyrillic glyphs in a font, or the extra width that Cyrillic words tend to need.

How much text should I generate?

As much as the real content will be. A layout that only works with conveniently sized filler breaks when the actual copy arrives.

Why is the text the same every time?

The generator is deterministic: the same settings give the same text, which is handy when a mockup has to be reproduced.

How many words are in a paragraph?

Four sentences of 8 to 16 words each. Three paragraphs come to 125 words, five to 225.

Worked example

Filling a card layout

Input: 3 paragraphs

Output: 125 words, 840 characters

Note: Match the length of your real copy. Placeholder text that is far shorter or longer hides exactly the layout problems you are trying to find.
