The allowance depends on the laying pattern

Packs of laminate including a cutting allowance, how much area is left over, and how many rolls of underlay to buy.

Laminate is sold by the pack and you cannot buy half of one, so the answer always rounds up. On top of the room area comes an allowance for cutting, because boards at the edges get trimmed and the offcuts are not always reusable.

How much allowance depends on the pattern. Straight along the wall needs 5 percent, staggered about 7, diagonal between 10 and 15. In a room with alcoves and columns, start at 15.

What to keep in mind

Pack area is printed on the packaging and depends on board size; 1.8 to 2.5 m² is typical.

FAQs

How much allowance should I add?

5 percent laying straight, 7 staggered, 10 to 15 diagonally. Add another five for bays, alcoves or columns.

Is underlay really necessary?

Yes. It damps noise, absorbs small irregularities and protects the click joints from load. Skip it and the floor starts creaking within a year.

What does the laminate class mean?

Wear resistance. Class 31 for bedrooms, 32 for living rooms and kitchens, 33 and 34 for hallways and commercial use. It does not affect the quantity.

Do I need an expansion gap?

Always, 8 to 10 mm around the perimeter. Laminate moves with humidity and will buckle without it. The gap does not change the area — skirting covers it.

Worked example

A 17.5 m² room

Input: 17.5 m², 2.13 m² per pack, 7% allowance

Output: 9 packs covering 19.17 m², 1.67 m² spare

Note: Nearly two square metres left over is fine and even useful — a couple of spare boards matter when one gets damaged moving furniture.
