The joint is part of the module

Tile count allowing for joint width, how many boxes that is, and how much adhesive and grout the job will take.

Tiles are counted by module — tile plus joint — not by the tile alone. A 300 mm tile with a 2 mm joint occupies 302 mm of wall, and across a large area that difference is worth several tiles.

Always allow spare. Ten percent covers straight laying, fifteen covers diagonal, and twenty is wise for large-format tile cut to fit. Matching a batch a month later is usually impossible.

What to keep in mind

Adhesive is estimated at 5 kg per m² with a 5 mm bed; large-format tile on a 10 mm notch takes roughly double.
Grout is estimated from joint volume at 1.6 kg per litre — the exact figure varies by manufacturer.

FAQs

What joint width should I use?

1.5 to 2 mm for wall tile, 3 to 5 mm for floor tile, 2 mm for large-format porcelain. Butt-jointing is not an option — tile expands with temperature.

How much tile adhesive will I need?

About 5 kg per m² with a 6-8 mm notch, and 8-10 kg with a 10-12 mm notch for larger tile. An uneven substrate pushes that up by half again.

How much spare for diagonal laying?

Fifteen percent as a minimum. Every edge tile gets cut and half the offcuts will not fit the next row.

How do I handle different tile sizes in one room?

Run the calculation once per zone. Floor and walls usually use different tile, different joints and different allowances.

Worked example

A 12 m² bathroom in 300 mm tile

Input: 12 m², 30 × 30 cm tile, 2 mm joint, 10% spare

Output: 145 tiles, 5 kg of grout, 60 kg of adhesive

Note: Ignoring the joint would suggest 147 tiles. The module with its joint is larger, so slightly fewer tiles cover the same wall.
