From a shift to a payable number

Enter start and end times, subtract the break, and get hours worked in both clock and decimal form for payroll.

Timesheets need two different formats of the same number. You work 8:30 in clock time, and payroll wants 8.5 in decimal hours.

Confusing the two is a real money problem: entering 8.30 instead of 8.5 underpays by twelve minutes on every single shift.

How to use

Enter the start and end of the shift.
Enter the break in minutes — the unpaid part of the day.
Read off the hours worked in clock format and in decimal hours for the timesheet.

Common shifts

Each row is a separate run. The break is subtracted as unpaid time; an end earlier than the start is read as the next day.

Every row comes from the calculator on this page.
Shift	Break	Worked	Decimal hours
09:00–18:00	60 min	8:00	8
09:00–17:30	30 min	8:00	8
08:00–16:45	45 min	8:00	8
09:00–17:20	30 min	7:50	7.83
22:00–06:00	30 min	7:30	7.5
07:00–19:00	60 min	11:00	11

What this calculator shows

Total hours worked after the break is deducted
Both clock format (8:30) and decimal format (8.5)
Correct results for shifts that run past midnight

What to keep in mind

The break is subtracted as unpaid time.
Overtime rules and rounding policies vary by employer and are not applied here.

FAQs

How do I convert 8 hours 45 minutes to decimal?

8.75. Divide the minutes by 60: 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75. Writing 8.45 on a timesheet costs you eighteen minutes.

Does it handle night shifts?

Yes. An end time earlier than the start is read as the following day, so 22:00 to 06:00 returns eight hours, or 7:30 with a half-hour break.

Should breaks always be deducted?

Only unpaid ones. The calculator subtracts whatever you enter as the break, so leave paid rest breaks out of that field; your contract says which breaks are paid.

What about overtime?

This gives the raw hours. In the United States the Fair Labor Standards Act entitles non-exempt employees to time-and-a-half for hours over 40 in a week; other countries set their own rules.

How many hours is 9 to 6 with an hour for lunch?

Exactly 8:00. Five such days make a 40-hour week.

How do I write 7 hours 50 minutes on a timesheet?

7.83 decimal hours: 50 ÷ 60 = 0.83. The calculator shows both forms at once — 7:50 and 7.83.

Worked example

A standard day with lunch

Input: 09:00 to 17:30, 30-minute break

Output: 8:00 worked = 8.0 decimal hours

Note: Without the break it would read 8:30, or 8.5 decimal — half an hour of difference every day, which is over two full days a year.
