Convert a gross salary to take-home pay at any tax rate, or work backwards from the net figure you need to the gross it requires.

Going from gross to net is simple subtraction. Going the other way is where people slip: to end up with 100,000 after 13% tax you need 114,943 gross, not 113,000.

The reason is that the tax is charged on the larger gross figure, so adding the same percentage back to the net amount always falls short.

FAQs

Why is net-to-gross not the same percentage?

Because the tax is a share of the gross, not the net. You divide by (1 − rate) rather than multiplying by (1 + rate).

Does this handle tax brackets?

No, it applies one flat rate. For progressive systems, use your effective rate — total tax divided by total income — to get a realistic figure.

Should freelancers use gross or net when quoting?

Quote gross, then check what it leaves. Contractors also carry costs an employee does not, so matching an employed salary needs a noticeably higher gross.

Are employer contributions included?

No. Those sit on top of your gross and never appear on your payslip, though they are part of what you cost the company.

Working backwards from take-home

Input: Net 100,000 at 13%

Output: Gross 114,943 · Tax 14,943

Note: Adding 13% to 100,000 would give 113,000 and leave you nearly 2,000 short — a common error in freelance quoting.
