Consistency beats the opening balance

What regular monthly investing builds at a given return, how much of it is growth rather than contributions, and what remains after inflation.

Over long horizons the starting sum matters far less than the discipline of contributing. Twenty thousand a month at twelve percent for ten years builds roughly four and a half million, of which nearly two million was earned rather than paid in.

The line worth reading twice is the inflation-adjusted total. Purchasing power erodes, and five million in ten years buys markedly less than five million today. Looking only at the nominal figure is the most common way to fool yourself.

FAQs

What return should I assume?

Historically a broad equity market has returned around 8 to 10 percent above inflation over very long periods. For bonds, use the current yield to maturity instead.

What is the four percent rule?

A rule of thumb that roughly 4 percent of accumulated capital can be withdrawn annually without exhausting it over thirty years. The passive-income line uses it.

Why look at the real figure?

Because money loses value. At 6 percent inflation a rouble keeps about 56 kopecks of purchasing power over ten years, so half the nominal growth is illusory.

Lump sum or spread out?

Statistically a lump sum wins more often, because markets rise most of the time. Regular contributions are easier psychologically and reduce the risk of one bad entry point.

Worked example

Ten years at twenty thousand a month

Input: 100,000 ₽ start, 20,000 ₽ monthly, 12% a year, 10 years, 6% inflation

Output: About 4.9m ₽, of which 2.5m was contributed
