Whether your current saving rate reaches the income you want, what capital that income requires, and what monthly contribution closes the gap.

Retirement planning is easier calculated from the end. First find the capital that supports the income: at a 4 percent withdrawal rate, wanting 80,000 a month means needing 24 million. Then check whether current saving reaches that.

The calculation shows how much time does. The same contributions over twenty-five years rather than fifteen produce roughly three times the capital — not because more went in, but because compounding ran longer.

FAQs

Where does the four percent rule come from?

William Bengen's study of historical returns: withdrawing 4 percent of the starting capital, adjusted for inflation, survived a thirty-year horizon in almost every scenario.

Should I include a state pension?

Yes, but carefully. Estimate it separately and subtract it from the target income — the required capital falls considerably.

Contribution size or time horizon?

Time, by a wide margin. Compounding means ten extra years of saving beats doubling the monthly amount over a short horizon.

What return should the plan assume?

Conservatively 7 to 8 percent nominal for a mixed portfolio. Higher figures are possible but risky to build a plan on — the error surfaces far too late.

Twenty-five years to go

Input: Age 35, retiring at 60, 500,000 ₽ saved, 25,000 ₽ a month, 10% return

Output: About 33m ₽ against the 24m required

Note: Comfortably ahead. Starting the same plan at 45 would reach only about 10m by sixty — time does more work than contribution size.
