Conversion as a percentage, visitors per conversion, and how much more traffic one extra conversion takes.

Conversion rate is the share of visitors who take the action you want. The arithmetic is trivial; what matters more is the figure beside it — how much traffic one conversion costs. That is what turns a percentage into money.

Market averages are nearly useless here. A shop at one or two percent can be healthier than a B2B site at five, because order value and sales cycle are incomparable. Compare yourself against yourself over time.

What to keep in mind

Conversion is counted against all visitors. Counting against unique visitors or sessions gives different figures — use one basis everywhere.
The target rate field is optional and only estimates how many conversions the same traffic would give on an improved site.

FAQs

What conversion rate is normal?

1 to 3 percent for an online shop, 5 to 15 for a landing page on warm traffic, 1 to 2 for a B2B site. Compare only with your own trend: source and price change everything.

More traffic or better conversion?

Conversion is almost always cheaper. Doubling traffic doubles the budget; lifting conversion from two to three percent is the same fifty percent more enquiries at no extra spend.

Sessions or people?

Either, as long as it is consistent across every report. Counted by people the figure is higher, since one person may visit several times before buying.

Why does conversion drop as traffic grows?

Because the new traffic is colder. The most relevant queries are bought first; broader audiences follow and convert less well. That is expected rather than alarming.

Worked example

A month on the site

Input: 60 conversions from 3,000 visitors

Output: 2 percent conversion, 50 visitors per enquiry

Note: Every extra enquiry needs fifty more visitors. At 50 per click that is 2,500 per enquiry — and lifting conversion to three percent saves a third of the budget without a single extra click.
