How much a given percentage of a number comes to, with the formula and the value of one percent so you can carry on in your head.

This is the most common percentage question of all: you have an amount and a rate, and you want the figure. Multiply and divide by a hundred — simple enough on paper, easy to fumble at a till or mid-conversation.

Watch the "one percent equals" line. Once you know it, every other percentage is a multiplication: if one percent of 2,400 is 24, then seven percent is 168 and forty percent is 960.

Rates above one hundred are fine: 150 percent of 200 is 300, and the calculator handles it without complaint.

FAQs

How do I work out a percentage in my head?

Find one percent by shifting the decimal two places, then multiply. For 15 percent there is a shortcut: take a tenth and add half of it.

How is this different from the reverse question?

Here the rate is known and the amount is unknown. If you have the amount and want to know what percentage it represents, use the "what percent is X of Y" page.

What does a percentage over 100 mean?

That the answer exceeds the starting number. 250 percent of 40 is 100. It comes up in growth statistics and in markup.

Why is the result not a round number?

Because not every percentage divides evenly: 7 percent of 333 is 23.31. Round to cents or whole units according to what you are doing.

Worked example

A tip in a restaurant

Input: 15% of 2,400

Output: 360

Note: One percent is 24, so ten percent is 240 and fifteen is that plus half again. Faster than reaching for a phone.
