Part ÷ whole × 100

The share one number represents of another, what percentage is left over, and the same share written as a fraction.

This question shows up wherever there is a part and a whole: what share of the budget went on rent, how much of the target a team hit, what percentage of a test was answered correctly. Divide the part by the whole and multiply by a hundred.

The usual slip is mixing up which number is the whole. The whole is the thing being compared against, and in English it is almost always the number that follows "of".

What to keep in mind

The whole cannot be zero — division by zero is refused rather than silently producing infinity.
If the part exceeds the whole the share goes above 100 percent, which is normal for overachieving a target.

FAQs

How do I tell which number is the whole?

It follows the word "of": in "360 of 2,400" the whole is 2,400. Swap them and you get 666.67 percent, which is obviously wrong on sight.

What if the share is over 100 percent?

The part is larger than the whole. For a sales target that is overachievement; for a budget it is an overspend. The arithmetic is unaffected.

How do I turn this into a mark or a grade?

Multiply by the maximum score. Eighty percent of 100 is 80 marks. There is a dedicated grade calculator for scoring schemes.

How is this different from percent difference?

This measures a part inside a whole. Percent difference answers a different question — how much bigger one number is than another — and treats both numbers as equals.

Worked example

Rent as a share of a budget

Input: 360 out of 2,400

Output: 15%

Note: That leaves 85 percent for everything else. As a fraction it is 360/2400, which simplifies to 3/20 — sometimes easier to picture.
