The margin runs out faster than it looks

Works out current attendance and how many more classes can be missed before the threshold is lost.

An attendance threshold is measured against the whole course, not against the classes held so far. Which makes the margin look generous early in the term and vanish by the end.

The calculation reports both figures at once: the current percentage and the absences still available. It also flags the point past which the threshold can no longer be met even with perfect attendance.

FAQs

What is the attendance percentage measured against?

The total number of classes in the course. Measuring against those already held is a common mistake that makes the margin look larger than it is.

What threshold is usually required?

Most often 75 percent, sometimes 60 or 80. The exact figure is in the institution's assessment regulations.

Do excused absences count?

It varies: some institutions remove them from the denominator, others treat them as ordinary absences. Worth checking before you fall ill, not after.

What happens below the threshold?

Usually exclusion from the exam until the missed classes are made up. The form that takes is set by the department.

Worked example

Halfway through the term

Input: 60 classes total, 45 held, 40 attended, 75% threshold

Output: 88.9% currently, with 10 more absences possible

Note: Only five of the fifteen remaining classes need attending. Miss all ten at once, though, and the final lands exactly on the threshold, so any unplanned absence then breaks it.
