When the exam counts for more than the homework

An average that respects how much each assessment counts, shown next to the unweighted average so the effect is visible.

Most schools and nearly all universities weight assessments: an exam counts for three ordinary marks, homework for one. A plain average in that system gives the wrong answer, sometimes by half a grade.

The weighted version multiplies each grade by its weight, adds them and divides by the total weight. The unweighted figure is shown beside it, so you can see immediately whether weighting is working for you or against you.

What to keep in mind

There must be as many weights as grades; a mismatch is reported rather than guessed at.
Weights can be any numbers — only their proportions matter, so percentages work as well as multipliers.

FAQs

Where do the weights come from?

The school's assessment policy or the course syllabus. Typical values are 3 for an exam, 2 for a test, 1 for homework and oral answers.

What if weights are given as percentages?

Enter them as they are — 40, 30, 30. Only the ratios matter, and they need not sum to a hundred.

Why is the weighted average lower than the plain one?

Because the weaker grades fell on the heavier assessments. That is exactly the signal weighting is meant to produce.

How do I compute a university semester average?

Use course credits as the weights and module grades as the grades.

Worked example

Four pieces of work with different weights

Input: Grades 5 4 3 5, weights 3 1 1 2

Output: Weighted 4.57 against plain 4.25

Note: The weighted figure is higher because the fives fell on the heavy assessments. Had the 3 been the exam, the comparison would flip.
