Every letter is a number

Converts text into binary, hexadecimal or decimal character codes and back again.

A computer knows no letters: it stores numbers, and letters appear only when they are displayed. A Latin H is the number 72; a Cyrillic А is 1040. Converting to binary simply shows the same number in another base.

Latin fits inside eight bits, which is why its binary form appears as neat groups of eight. Cyrillic needs more, and its codes run past a single byte — visible immediately in the length of the groups.

What to keep in mind

Unicode code points are encoded rather than UTF-8 bytes: for Latin these coincide, for Cyrillic they do not.
When decoding, groups are separated by spaces or commas and must match the chosen base.

FAQs

How do I convert text to binary?

Take each character's code and write it in base two. A Latin A is 65, which is 01000001.

Why are Cyrillic codes longer?

Because Cyrillic letters are numbered above a thousand and do not fit in one byte. In UTF-8 they take two.

How does a code point differ from UTF-8 bytes?

A code point is the character's number in the Unicode table; UTF-8 is a way of writing that number as bytes. They coincide for Latin and diverge elsewhere.

How do I decode binary?

Split into groups, convert each to decimal, and look up the character with that code. The tool does that in reverse mode.

Worked example

Two Latin characters

Input: Hi into binary

Output: 01001000 01101001

Note: H is 72 and i is 105. Both are exactly eight bits, because Latin fits in a byte. A Cyrillic А is 1040, and its binary form already takes eleven digits.
