When a character is not what it looks like

Shows the code point, UTF-8 bytes, HTML entity and escape sequence for every character.

Two characters that look identical can carry different codes: a Latin 'a' and a Cyrillic 'а' are indistinguishable on screen but are different letters, numbered 97 and 1072. Substitutions like that break search, string comparison and URL validation.

Inspecting by code point shows immediately what is actually in a string: an invisible non-breaking space, a zero-width character, or that Cyrillic letter hiding inside an English word.

What to keep in mind

Only the first forty characters are inspected: the tool is for checking individual marks rather than whole documents.
Character names are not shown; they would need the full Unicode table, which weighs more than the tool itself.

FAQs

How do I find a character's code?

Paste it in: the tool shows the code point as U+XXXX along with the decimal number.

How does a code point differ from a UTF-16 unit?

Characters beyond the basic plane, including most emoji, take two UTF-16 units. Which is why a JavaScript string length can exceed the number of visible characters.

What are HTML entities for?

Inserting a character into markup without relying on the file's encoding. Writing Ё renders Ё whatever the page encoding is.

How do I find invisible characters?

Paste the suspect fragment in: a non-breaking space at U+00A0 and a zero-width character at U+200B both show up in the breakdown, though neither is visible on screen.

Note: The numero sign № exists only on Cyrillic layouts and is regularly confused with a hash. Different codes mean a search for one will never find the other.
