One key, two letters

Turns text typed in the wrong keyboard layout back into readable text, in either direction and with automatic detection.

The Russian and Latin layouts share the same physical keys. The key marked Q produces Й in Russian mode, W produces Ц, E produces У. Forget to switch and every letter lands in the wrong place — but the mapping is exact and reversible.

This tool simply applies the inverse mapping. Automatic detection looks at which script dominates: if Latin characters outnumber Cyrillic, the text was almost certainly meant to be Russian.

What to keep in mind

The standard Russian ЙЦУКЕН layout and US QWERTY are assumed; other layouts map differently.
Punctuation moves too, because it shares keys with letters: a comma on Latin sits on the same key as б on Cyrillic.

FAQs

How do I decode text typed in the wrong layout?

Apply the inverse key mapping. Ghbdtn is 'Привет' typed on a Russian keyboard left in Latin mode.

Does it work both ways?

Yes. Russian text typed in Latin mode and Latin text typed in Russian mode both convert the same way.

Why does punctuation come out strangely?

Because it sits on the same keys as letters. The comma in the Latin layout is the б key in the Russian one.

How do I stop forgetting to switch?

Tray indicators and auto-switching utilities help. The only complete fix is the habit of watching the screen rather than the keyboard.

Note: The punctuation is deliberately omitted here: a Latin comma becomes б and a question mark becomes a comma. That is not a flaw in the tool but a consequence of the keys being shared.
