Two measurable habits decide most of the difficulty

Score text on the Flesch reading-ease scale and see the two things that drive it: sentence length and syllables per word.

The Flesch formula rests on two observable facts: long sentences and long words make text harder. It cannot judge whether your argument is good, only whether the sentences are manageable.

The practical value is in the components rather than the score. If your average sentence runs past 25 words, that is a concrete thing to fix.

What to keep in mind

The formula was designed for English; on Russian it is indicative rather than calibrated.
Syllables are counted from vowel groups, which is an approximation in both languages.

FAQs

What is a good readability score?

Around 60–70 suits general audiences and is roughly what mainstream newspapers hit. Technical documentation sits lower, and that is often appropriate.

Does this work for Russian?

Directionally. The coefficients were fitted to English, and Russian words average more syllables, so the absolute number reads low. Comparing your own drafts still works.

Should I always aim for a higher score?

No. A legal contract or a technical spec has to be precise, and precision costs readability. Use the score to catch accidental complexity, not to flatten necessary detail.

What is the fastest way to improve it?

Split long sentences. Sentence length carries most of the weight, and it is far easier to change than vocabulary.

Two sentences, very different difficulty

Input: A short sentence next to a long clause-heavy one

Output: Score drops sharply as sentence length rises

Note: Splitting one 40-word sentence into two twenty-word sentences usually moves the score by ten points or more.
