Duty depends on age and engine size

Customs duty, recycling fee and clearance charge for a car imported by a private individual, with the total including the car itself.

Import charges come in three parts: duty, the recycling fee and a clearance charge. Duty is calculated differently depending on the car's age, and the dividing line falls at three years.

Cars under three years old are charged on value with a per-cc floor; anything older is charged on displacement alone. So a cheap old car with a large engine sometimes costs more to import than it is worth.

FAQs

Why do three and five years matter so much?

Under three years a combined value-based rate applies; three to five carries the lowest per-cc rate; over five it rises again. Five-year-old cars are the cheapest to bring in.

Is it different for companies?

Very. Companies pay duty, 20 percent VAT, excise by engine power and the full recycling schedule — several times what an individual pays.

What about electric cars?

Separate rules that have changed repeatedly, sometimes with concessions. Verify the current position specifically for electric vehicles.

Can I sell the car straight after importing it?

Sell within a year after importing at personal-use rates and customs will bill the difference up to commercial rates, recycling fee included.

Worked example

A four-year-old 1.6 litre car

Input: €15,000, 1600 cc, 4 years old, rate 100 ₽

Output: Duty 400,000 ₽, total charges about 409,000 ₽

Note: Duty is 1600 × €2.5 per cc. The car's price does not enter into it at this age — only displacement and age matter.
