Splits a restaurant bill between any number of people, adds the tip and rounds each share up to a note people actually carry.

Dividing a bill is a single division. What makes it awkward at the table is everything around it: the tip has to go on before the split, not after, and nobody wants to hand over a share ending in 47.

So this rounds each share up to a step you choose and shows what that rounding collects. The surplus is usually a few coins, which is exactly the amount that quietly becomes an extra tip.

What to keep in mind

Everyone pays the same. If someone only had coffee, take their part out of the total first and split the rest.
The tip is calculated on the bill as printed, service charge included if the restaurant already added one.

FAQs

Should the tip go on before or after the split?

Before. Adding a percentage to the whole bill and then dividing gives the same answer as tipping each share, but only if everyone tips the same — and doing it once avoids the rounding drifting apart.

How much is a normal tip?

Ten percent is the common default where service is not included. Where a service charge is already on the bill, anything extra is genuinely optional.

What if people ordered very differently?

Take the expensive items out of the total, charge them to whoever ordered them, and split what is left. An even split of a bill where one person had the wine tends to be the last time that group eats out together.

Why round up rather than to the nearest?

Rounding down means the table comes up short and someone has to top it up. Rounding up always covers the bill, and the small surplus goes to the tip.

Worked example

A bill for five

Input: 8,400 for five people, a 10 percent tip, rounded up to 50

Output: 1,850 each

Note: The exact share is 1,848. Rounding up to 50 collects 9,250 against a 9,240 bill, so ten extra goes to the tip and nobody has to count out coins.
