The calculator works out the tip on a bill at the percentage you pick, the total with the tip, and what each person pays if you split it. Shares can be rounded up to 1, 5 or 10, and the calculator then shows the tip percentage you actually left.

How much to tip in the US

The Emily Post Institute's general tipping guide suggests 15–20% of the pre-tax bill for sit-down wait service and 10% at a buffet. Take-out carries no obligation, with 10% for extra service such as curbside delivery or a large order. For delivery it suggests 10–15% of the bill, or $2–5 for a pizza, and 15–20% for a taxi fare, with a $1 minimum, and for hair salon, manicure and spa services.

How to work out a tip in your head

Tip = bill × percentage ÷ 100. Start from 10%, which is the bill with the decimal point moved one place left: 10% of 64.00 is 6.40. Double it for 20%, 12.80. Add half of it for 15%, 9.60. 18% is 20% minus a tenth of the 20%: 12.80 − 1.28 = 11.52.

Tip on the amount before tax, as the guideline above suggests: on a 64.00 subtotal a 20% tip is 12.80, whatever the tax line adds.

Splitting the bill and rounding each share

Each share = (bill + tip) ÷ number of people. An 86.40 bill for three with an 18% tip comes to 101.95, or 33.98 each. Rounding each share up to 35 collects 105.00, which turns the tip into 18.60, or 21.53% of the bill. The calculator shows that figure so rounding does not quietly make you far more generous than you meant.

When a service charge is already on the bill

Check the bill before you tip. If a service charge is already included, the percentage in this calculator goes on top of it, so work out any extra tip on the amount before the charge, or lower the percentage.

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

The Emily Post Institute suggests 15–20% of the pre-tax bill for sit-down service and 10% at a buffet. On an 80.00 bill that is 12.00 to 16.00.

Should I tip on the amount before or after tax?

Before tax, according to the Emily Post Institute's guide. On a 64.00 subtotal a 20% tip is 12.80, regardless of the tax.

How do I calculate a 20% tip quickly?

Move the decimal point one place left to get 10%, then double it. For 64.00: 6.40 × 2 = 12.80. For 15%, add half of the 10% instead: 6.40 + 3.20 = 9.60.

How much do you tip for food delivery?

The Emily Post Institute suggests 10–15% of the bill, or $2–5 for a pizza depending on the size of the order and how hard the delivery is.

How much do you tip a taxi driver?

15–20% of the fare with a minimum of $1, plus $2 for the first bag carried and $1 for each additional bag, according to the Emily Post Institute's guide.

How do I split a bill with a tip?

Add the tip to the bill and divide by the number of people. 86.40 for three with 18% is 33.98 each. Rounded up to 35 each, 105.00 is collected and the tip becomes 21.53% of the bill.

What if the bill already includes a service charge?

The calculator adds its percentage on top of whatever you enter, so enter the amount before the charge if you want to add a further tip, or lower the percentage.
